Dr Dev Banerjee

Dr Dev Banerjee is an experienced sleep expert practicing in Sydney Australia at the Woolcock Institute of Medical Research, University of Sydney, and the St Vincents Hospital, Darlinghurst, Sydney and recently at the Integrated Sleep Health Clinic Martin Place Sydney. He graduated in Medicine from the University of Leeds, UK with extensive training in Sleep Medicine in the UK and Australia. His training in Respiratory Medicine and Sleep Medicine took place in the West Midlands UK followed by a 14 months Clinical and Research Fellow appointment at the Woolcock Institute and Royal Prince Alfred Hospital Sydney 2003 and 2004. Between 2004 and 2013, he was a Senior Consultant Physician in Sleep Medicine at the Birmingham Heartlands Hospital, and Senior Research Fellow at Aston University between 2009 and 2013. Currently he has an academic role in sleep research at the Woolcock Institute of Medical Research, facilitating clinical trials and also developing respiratory failure and sleep services at the St Vincent's Hospital Sydney. Other roles include providing sleep advice regularly on TV and Radio and Newspapers, and assisting Court as a medicolegal expert in the field of Sleep Medicine.

Professor Ron Grunstein

Professor Ron Grunstein has been a consultant physician in sleep disorders for over 30 years and a pioneer in improving patient care in sleep medicine in Australia and internationally. He is currently a Senior Principal Research Fellow of the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC highest level research appointment) and Professor of Sleep Medicine at the University of Sydney. Ron heads the Sleep and Circadian Research Group at the Woolcock Institute of Medical Research and the NHMRC’s Centre of Research Excellence in Sleep and Circadian Translational Neurobiology aka “Neurosleep”. As well, he is Program Leader in the Co-operative Research Centre in Alertness, Safety and Productivity part-funded by the Commonwealth Department of Industry to answer the challenge of poor sleep and sleepiness impacting on driving, work and society in general.

From 2007-2011, Professor Grunstein served as President of the World Sleep Federation, the roof body for sleep researchers and clinicians internationally organising successful world congresses in Cairns and Kyoto. He was awarded the Australasian Sleep Association Distinguished Achievement Award in 2010, the Kleitman Award, the premier award of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine in 2011 and the Royal Prince Alfred Foundation Medal for Excellence in Medical Research in 2012. In 2014, he received the Distinguished Professor Award from the Sydney Medical School and in 2016 has been awarded the Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand Research Medal.

Liora Kempler

Liora Kempler graduated from a Bachelor of Advanced Science with a major in Psychology at the University of New South Wales. She is a Psychologist at the Woolcock Institute of Medical Research, Glebe and at the Integrated Sleep Health Clinic, Bondi Junction. Liora specialises in treating adults with sleep disorders, insomnia, depression, postnatal depression and anxiety as well as specialising in sleep during pregnancy and with infants and toddlers. Her preferred treatment practices include cognitive behavioural therapy, mindfulness, acceptance and commitment therapy and psychotherapy. She is also a PhD candidate at the University of Sydney in the School of Psychology under supervisors Prof Louise Sharpe and A/Prof Delwyn Bartlett. Her PhD project is investigating the efficacy of a novel sleep intervention in helping first time expectant mothers better manage the changes and challenges in their sleep, both during pregnancy and as new mothers.
